Behind the mystical temple of Angkor Wat and its sightseers, lurks another hidden, dirty but thriving tourism industry. Travellers decide either to look away OR they support it.

Before visiting Cambodia, I already knew the children are exploited in many ways. I was not prepared for I did see. Child tourism ranges from voyeurs, sexual predators to well-intentioned “voluntourism”. This has sparked the campaign Children Are Not Tourist Attractions

  • Tourists arrive at landfills in tuk tuks, taxis are simply voyeurs to watch child labour work in landfills picking at garbage under the hot sun and amongst the stench of trash.
  • Tour guide companies have even included this as a stop on the itinerary to promises to offer a “shocking and humbling experience”
  • The children do not benefit in this “tourist stop” in any way
  • Due to economic reasons children are forced by families or simply abandoned and work to earn money by rummaging…
